There are three basic levels of car insurance available in the UK; Third Party Only (TPO), Third Party Fire and Theft (TPFT) and Comprehensive.
Third party only
Third party only insurance (TPO) provides you with the legal minimum level of cover that you need to drive a car in the UK. This kind of policy aims to help protect other people, vehicles and property in the event of an accident that is deemed to be your fault. With ‘third party only’ insurance you will be covered for:
- Liability for injury to others
- Damage to others property
- Liability for damage caused whilst towing a trailer
With third party only cover it is worth noting that you will not be covered for any damage that is done to your own vehicle or any injuries that you suffer if an accident is your fault. To be covered for these elements you will need a comprehensive insurance policy.
Third party fire and theft
As well as protecting you for the elements that third party only does, with ‘third party fire and theft you will also be covered for:
- Damage by fire
- The theft of your own car
- Damage to your car caused during an act of theft
This cover for ‘damage by fire’ applies to accidental fires as well as fires caused on purpose (arson). To claim for arson you will need a crime reference number.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive cover is the most extensive car insurance policy that is available for UK drivers and includes everything that third party fire and theft does with the following additional benefits:
- Loss or damage to your own car
- Windscreen cover
- Personal effects cover
- Accidental damage
- Medical expenses
