New Transit XXL 'could interest
Ford van insurance customers'
03/01/07
Ford has unveiled a brand new one-off special edition based on
its existing commercial vehicle fleet, which may be the largest
Transit in the world.
The Transit XXL has a total length of 7.4 metres, as opposed to
the 4.9 metres offered by the standard Transit Tourneo model, reports
AutoWired.
Moreover, its wheelbase measures 5.9 metres, which doubles the
2.9 metres found on its mass-produced cousin.
On top of this, transit insurance customers may be interested to
hear that the vehicle offers two full-sized sliding doors on either
side to maximise accessibility into the rear storage area.
Despite the increased scale of the special edition model, it is
still powered by the same Ford 2.2-litre TDCi engine found on standard
variants, in news that might be of interest to van insurance companies.
However, it does feature specially-adapted versions of the five-speed
gearbox and braking systems.
Barry Gale, Ford of Europe's chief engineer for commercial vehicles,
explained the concept behind the extra-large model.
"Transit XXL takes us in a different direction as we wanted to show that
the refinement of the new Transit allows it to be a limousine," he said.
"One thing is for sure - it provokes amazing reactions from all who see
it."
Last month, the Ford Transit Connect was named Fleet Van of the
Year by the Association of Car Fleet Operators.
Handed out at the Vans of the Year Awards 2006, it is the fourth
time that Ford has won the distinction, which could potentially
drive demand for transit insurance in the future.
