TV makeover shows inspire homeowners
15/12/05
Many Brits have found themselves inspired to carry out some DIY after watching the experts on TV makeover shows, according to a new survey.
One in five Brits found themselves picking up a paintbrush after watching hit programmes including Changing Rooms, Grand Designs, Ground Force and Property Ladder. Homeowners have consequently added an average of £7,870 to the price of their home.
TV design gurus have lead 63 per cent to repaint the walls, 44 per cent to replace the flooring, 39 per cent to re-landscape their garden and 19 per cent to knock down walls, according to Privilege home insurance.
But some went all-out with four per cent deciding to install a gym, add a swimming pool or build a tennis court.
Londoners added the most value to their home, with an average price increase of £12,793. But those from the north-west saw less financial gain, adding just £5,549 after the makeover.
But for some unlucky DIY enthusiasts, their brush with the world of home improvements proved disastrous. One in ten has consequently injured themselves in some way and four per cent have ended up damaging their property.
Ian Parker, managing director of Privilege Home Insurance, said: "It appears that adding value to your home is a hidden benefit of the changes people make to their homes because they have been inspired by TV shows.
"But those afflicted by makeover madness need to be careful that they are not one of the unlucky ones who injure themselves in the process of improving their homes."
