Kids Bedrooms 'worth £14
billion'
28/02/07
The importance of having a comprehensive home contents insurance
policy has been further highlighted, with new research revealing
that children's bedrooms across the UK contain £14 billion
worth of goods.
The report, published by Co-operative Insurance, found that the
average child now has £1,260 worth of gadgets in their rooms,
including computers, televisions and mobile phones.
Children in the north-east have the most expensive bedrooms, with
their contents costing an average of £1,540, in comparison
to an average of £978 for Welsh bedrooms.
Furthermore, one in ten of parents claimed that their child's room
is home to over £2,500 of the latest gadgets.
The statistics come despite 60 per cent of the parents questioned
by the Co-operative saying that they believed today's children
own too many gadgets and electrical items.
Commenting on the findings, the CIS director of general insurance,
David Neave, said: "Many parents simply do not realise just
how valuable the contents of their children's rooms are.
"It is important for people to regularly review the vale of their home
contents and if necessary increase the level of cover to ensure that it is
adequate."
These latest statistics follow on from a recent support which estimated
that children leave the home with hundreds of pounds worth of goods,
with 60 per cent of youngsters carrying a mobile phone and 46 per
cent carrying an MP3 player.
These trends have prompted insurance providers to remind consumers
of the importance of keeping their home insurance policies up-to-date
and to seriously consider making sure they are covered for the
loss of items outside of their home.
