Houses prone to flooding need to do more

02/11/05

Many homeowners whose houses have suffered flood damage believe their property is still at risk but are doing nothing to protect it, a new survey shows.

Research by Norwich Union shows that nearly half of the homeowners surveyed believe their property will be at risk if another flood happens. But 80 per cent said they would not make changes to their homes despite knowing firsthand the stress and disruption caused by flooding.

Nearly a quarter of people could not get back into their homes for three months whilst a further fifth were left homeless for between three and six months.

Two fifths of people found that the disruption to family life was the most difficult aspect of flooding to cope with and just over a quarter said that the loss of property and possessions was particularly hard to come to terms with.

Mary Dhonau from the National Flood Forum said: "It is impossible to quantify the emotional toll and strain caused by a flood. We would strongly advise anyone to research the potential flood risks in their area and seek advice about how this might affect their property."

Norwich union recommend that those living in high risk areas install flood boards which can easily be placed around doors to keep out flash flood water for several hours. One-way valves in drainage pipes can also prevent sewage from backing up into the house.

Pump and sump systems below the floorboards can help remove water. Replacing perishable materials such as floorboards, wooden fittings and gypsum plaster with concrete, ceramic or plastic can also help reduce damage.

Expensive items such as boilers, services meters and electrical points should be moved above water.
