Home insurance policyholders
given claims advice
08/03/07
Home insurance customers have been offered tips on how to make
a claim in the event that their property sustains flood damage.
This week, 29 flood warnings have been handed out for areas across
the UK amid concerns that heavy rainfall is on the way.
And home insurance policyholders who find contents swept away or
building foundations damaged have been urged by Lloyds TSB Insurance
to contact their home insurance company as soon as possible.
Also, should emergency repairs to the property be deemed essential
before the home insurance company can send out assessors, homeowners
have been told to ensure they keep receipts in a safe place to
speed up the home insurance claims process.
Finally, homeowners should avoid turning on gas and electricity
supplies if their property is flooded to protect themselves and
minimise the risk of causing further damage to the house, the home
insurance provider has indicated.
"The number of flood warnings in place is cause for concern, but with
the right preparation and know-how, it is often possible to get things back
to normal relatively quickly if your home is damaged," commented Phil
Loney, managing director of Lloyds TSB Insurance.
"If you have been hit by floods, you should get in touch with your insurer
straight away."
One of the most high-profile flooding cases of recent years caused
havoc in the Cornish village of Boscastle in 2004, when flash floods
overturned cars and washed away thousands of pounds of valuables
from local homes.
A further financing problem may now await residents of the village,
since home insurance companies typically hike premiums for areas
that have been recently affected by flood damage.
