Young driver campaign launched in Surrey
05/04/08
A campaign has been launched in Surrey to target young motorists who potentially risk car insurance claims by driving too fast or irresponsibly.
The Surrey Safety Camera Partnership has developed the Drive 2 Survive campaign in a bid to encourage young drivers to take care on the roads. It also hopes to reduce the number of traffic casualties through its work.
As part of the initiative, a website has been developed featuring a number of safety tips for motorists and also offering the facility for drivers to upload clips of other motorists behaving irresponsibly at the wheel.
Prizes are being offered for the best videos uploaded.
Surrey Safety Camera Partnership's project manager Duncan Knox commented that young driver statistics do not make for pleasant reading, with one-third of males between the ages of 17 and 20 expected to have a crash within two years of having passed their test.
Young males are more likely than others to drive to fast or try to show off, meaning they are also more likely to get injured, Mr Knox stated.
"Young women are also vulnerable, both as passengers and drivers, so we hope that young people across Surrey will take on board the safety tips and visit the website to watch the video clips and find out how to Drive 2 Survive," he added.
Female drivers in Lancashire were targeted by the Highways Agency earlier this year via the body's Hi publication, developed especially for young women motorists.
