York recognised for secure parking options
26/09/07
Drivers planning to park up in York can rest at ease - the city's car parks are unlikely to pose a danger to a motorist's car insurance premiums.
Car parks in the area have recently gained Park Mark status for their high levels of security and safety, the York Press reports.
Safer York Partnership's architectural liaison officer John Manual was responsible for assessing the car parks to see whether they matched up to essential criteria.
"Basically, what I am looking for is a safe and secure car park that exudes a safe and non-threatening environment," he stated.
Meanwhile, Jane Mowat, director of Safer York Partnership, said: "We now have more than 20 assessed and accredited car parks in York with virtually zero crime reported on any of these sites."
She added that the city would like to see visitors, potentially including car insurance holders, return to York after an initial trip, safe in the knowledge that their vehicle would be safe.
The Park Mark scheme, run by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), receives support from the Scottish executive in addition to the UK government.
Phil Taylor, ACPO Park Mark regional manager, stated that York is home to a number of "excellent examples" of security measures being put into practice, especially in park and ride car parks.
He said he was pleased to be bestowing the honour upon the city to help it ensure that its car park security meets the highest standards.
