Warwickshire quiz teaches road safety issues to schoolchildren
22/06/07
Thousands of school children have been taught about road safety issues as part of an initiative in Warwickshire.
Every year for the past decade, Warwickshire county council has run the Road Safety Quiz, which is targeted at local primary school pupils, reports the Coventry Telegraph.
For 2007, a total of 19,000 children have been invited to learn about ways of improving road safety - such as how to cross a road properly and what to do in the event of a road safety incident taking place.
And while 108 primary schools initially took part in the contest, this figure has now been whittled down to 39 teams who have demonstrated their knowledge of road safety rules.
The school of the winning pupils will receive £100 in prize money and the kids themselves will be awarded the Road Safety Quiz shield at the final this week.
And Jane Lees, Road Safety Quiz organiser and road safety officers at the council, has explained why she believes the competition is beneficial.
"This is one of the highlights of the road safety calendar and, although it's a fun evening, everyone takes it very seriously indeed," she said.
"The quiz is a vital way of raising road safety awareness to children and their parents."
In related news, this week saw road safety charity Brake claim that it had smashed a world record with its latest road safety-themed event.
According to provisional estimates, more than 100,000 children took part in this year's walk, breaking the previous walking bus record of 57,476 participants.
