Tyre-ripping roadworks 'highlight insurance need'
14/03/08
The need for a good car insurance policy was brought home to some residents in Hampshire recently after they sustained damage to their tyres driving through roadworks.
Basingstoke's Gazette reports that a number of drivers suffered rips to their car tyres after driving through some roadworks in the Romsey area.
According to one motorist, the problems left him in need of a breakdown truck and some new tyres, leading to him threatening to file a claim against Hampshire county council.
"I was driving through the roadworks when the two nearside tyres were ripped to shreds," said Jem Musselwhite, a businessman from Romsey, according to the newspaper. "I think it's absolutely abysmal and it could have caused a very nasty accident."
Another driver who suffered similar problems claimed that he "knew straight away" that his tyre had burst when he was driving through the roadworks and heard a loud bang.
The county council has told the paper that a "small number" of tyres were damaged overnight following work carried out by contractors.
A spokesperson for the council said that "a couple of road gullies had been missed" by the contractors when making the site fit to drive on after a shift which lead to the problems.
Elsewhere in the country, car insurance holders are among those frustrated by a recent announcement in Newbury that work being carried out by Thames Water looks set to continue, prolonging roadworks in one part of the area.
According to Newbury Today, the Cheap Street roadworks will carry on for a further four weeks than originally planned.
