Speeding fine numbers cut in the Highlands
14/04/08
The number of fines given to drivers in Scotland for speeding has fallen by a fifth in some areas.
According to findings cited recently by the Scotsman, while the number of fines issued from 2006-07 rose slightly, the number dropped by 20 per cent in the Highlands.
Some 114,107 speeding fines were issued across the country, 4,695 of which were given to drivers in the Highlands.
In total, the fines generated £6.8 million in revenue, potentially prompting more drivers to take care not to risk a car insurance claim or worse by exceeding the speed limit in future.
Despite the positive result in the Highlands, some motoring bodies have suggested that the figure can be attributed not to improved driver skills, but to motorists knowing the positions of speed cameras.
Bruce Young, the Lothian and Borders coordinator of the Association of British Drivers, said: "Drivers are increasingly aware of both fixed and mobile camera locations."
Meanwhile, Neil Greig, director for Scotland of the Institute of Advanced Motorists' Motoring Trust, stated: "There are many reasons why ticket numbers are falling - drivers are getting the safety message in towns, camera sites are now well known and drivers with some points on their licence are being extra careful."
Strathclyde also saw a significant reduction in speeding fines issued of 17 per cent.
Motorists found to be breaking the speed limit become liable for a fine of £60 in addition to three penalty points on their driver's licence.
