Speeding drivers caught out in Somerset
31/03/08
Over 80 drivers have been caught breaking the speed limit during a clampdown by police in north Somerset.
A total of 753 vehicles underwent police speed checks, with 83 - about one in ten cars - found to be driving above the 30mph speed limit.
The "day of action" came as part of the Avon and Somerset Constabulary's Safer Stronger Neighbourhood campaign.
Drivers in the Clevedon, Wrington, Yatton and Kingston Seymour areas were targeted by officers, with roads that had previously been the subject of complaints from local residents being particularly focused on.
Clevedon neighbourhood beat manager PC Nick Butler explained that the aim of the day was to raise awareness of the danger of speeding and how it can lead to road collisions.
"Evidence has shown over the years that by reducing their speed, motorists can help to reduce to reduce the number of collisions. Advice was given to drivers on the reason for the speedwatch event and the importance of them adhering to speed limits in place on certain sections of road," he commented.
PC Butler added that the day had proved to be a success and said warning letters would be sent to those found to be driving above 35mph. Another day of speed checks will take place in six weeks' time.
Earlier this month, the constabulary undertook an operation to crack down on antisocial behaviour in vehicles in Weston-super-Mare after receiving reports of a large car cruise that was set to take place on Easter Sunday.
