Car insurance customers alerted to Solihull speeding crackdown

20/06/07

Police officers in the West Midlands have confirmed they will be clamping down on car insurance customers and other road users who speed over the coming weeks.

Following a recent rise in the number of road fatalities reported in and around Solihull, the Solihull Road Policing Unit has announced it is to begin conducting spot-checks across the town.

During the checks, police officers will be making use of laser tracking devices to monitor the speed of passing motorists, car insurance customers may be concerned to hear.

And drivers who are found to be exceeding the local 30 mph speed restriction may be pulled over by police officers and given three penalty points on their driving licence.

Since car insurance companies typically rates for motorists with penalty points, this could lead to some motorists in Solihull suffering a hike in their car insurance premiums.

Sergeant Damian Shave of the Solihull Road Policing Unit has explained that the team is attempting to boost road safety figures with the initiative.

"We are undertaking this operation to show people who speed that there are consequences to their actions," he said.

"Speeding not only gives the driver points on their licence, it can cost lives. We want Solihull to be as safe as possible and cracking down on bad drivers is part of this."

Recently, the Norwich Evening News reported that a local resident had claimed speed restrictions introduced on The Street in Costessey by Norfolk county council were a threat to road safety.

As part of a design overhaul, a 20 mph speed limit was imposed on the route.

However, the changes have come in for criticism from retired company director Andrew Brown.
