Sign-ignoring drivers may risk car insurance claim
10/09/07
Motorists in Peterborough may be putting their car insurance premiums at risk by opting to bypass congestion and use roads marked as being no entry.
The Peterborough Evening Telegraph reports that in just one hour, its photographers snapped 12 drivers in the Woodston area trying to save time by driving up roads with no entry, potentially risking a car insurance claim should they collide with an oncoming vehicle.
Chief photographer Rowland Hobson said that some drivers were too impatient to wait three or minutes and follow the diversions around the roadworks, acting as if the rules of the road did not apply to them.
A police spokesperson said: "Officers have been made aware of the problems where motorists have been driving through a no entry sign and the wrong way down a one way street.
"Driving in this manner places the driver and other motorists in danger of a head on collision."
He added that anyone found to be contravening the road signage would find themselves facing a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence.
Landlord of the nearby pub The Office Stephen Griffin told the publication that if the practice continues there could be an accident - which may impact upon the car insurance premiums of the drivers involved.
Another local pub landlord Angry Geoff Caprio said he wondered if the motorists "have any brain in their heads".
Recently, drivers in Northamptonshire were warned to steer clear of pedestrianised areas as driving through these parts could pose a risk to safety, as well as potentially resulting in a car insurance claim.
