Scottish funding 'could help
young driver car insurance customers get cheaper cover'
12/02/07
Young driver car insurance policyholders in Scotland who want
cheaper premiums have been alerted to news that the Scottish executive
plans to help pay for advanced driver training sessions.
The new pilot initiative will see the Scottish parliament contribute
up to £75 to motorists aged between 17 and 25 years old who
undertake the Driving Standards Agency's Pass Plus programme in
either Moray, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
When this figure is added to money already pledged by some of these
councils towards advanced driver training, it means that some Scottish
motorists will be able to get financial backing for £135
of the £150 programme.
Since a number of car and van insurance companies offer automatic
discounts for motorists who complete the course, this means that
a young commercial vehicle user could reduce their total motoring
costs by enrolling on the scheme.
The pilot funding programme will be offered for six months at first,
although it could subsequently become a permanent feature of Scottish
transport policy if it improves local road safety records.
Commenting, Leslie Harrold, road safety manager at Grampian police,
said that Pass Plus is an "excellent scheme" for people
who have just passed their test.
"It is a scheme I would recommend to anyone who is learning to drive or
who has recently passed their test," he added.
"It should make them a more competent driver and offer them the chance
to get cheaper motor insurance once they have completed the scheme."
According to a recent study by financial website moneysupermarket.com,
the average motor insurance quote for people aged between 17 and
19 years old was £1,503.73 last year.
