Rural citizens urged to join
car insurance customers in rejecting road charges
06/02/07
Car insurance customers may be interested to know that rural communities
have been urged to add their names to a petition against proposals
to pay a toll for using congested roads.
The Association of British Drivers (ABD), which campaigns on behalf
of UK car insurance customers on a range of issues, made the comments
after it was confirmed that the government is considering charging
drivers for use of major roads in a bid to reduce overcrowding.
However, Mark McArthur-Christie, policy director at the ABD, explained
why he thought the proposals would be bad news for people living
in the countryside.
"Road charging will be levied at its highest on the most congested roads," he
said.
"Many will not wish to take the risk and will of course seek alternative
routes.
"Unfortunately for villagers and users of quiet country lanes, these will
very often be the routes they seek out."
To register disapproval of the plan, the ABD has called on motorists
to sign an online petition, which it is claimed already features
650,000 names.
By law, motorists already have to pay for a range of services before
they can get behind the wheel, such as road tax, MOT bills and
car insurance cover.
And they may also be obliged to pay substantial sums of money when
learning to drive a car before they manage to successfully pass
their test.
As a result, many car insurance customers may be concerned at the
prospect of having to shell out more money to pay for using busy
motorways and trunk roads.
