Police target dangerous Devon drivers

Police in Devon are hoping to catch law-breaking drivers who may be risking a claim on their car insurance by committing offences behind the wheel.

Officers have launched a month long campaign in the form of Operation Vortex, which will see drivers pulled over by four unmarked police cars and a motorcycle if they are seen putting themselves or other road users at risk.

During a four-hour preparatory session last week, officers spotted 26 motorists breaking the law, with some found to be using their mobile phones behind the wheel and others travelling at speeds in excess of 90 mph - potentially putting their car insurance premiums at risk.

Sergeant Glen Bullock stated: "It's fairly evident there has been an increase in the complacent and aggressive attitude of certain motorists across the force area."

The sergeant added that there had been an increase in incidents recently and that officers hoped that the operation would help to reverse the trend.

Many incidents often feature aggressive driving or excess speed, he stated.

A report from the Department for Transport and the Association of Chief Police Officers outlines that aggressive driving can include undisciplined lane behaviour and tailgating, which may lead to other drivers and road users feeling threatened.

Motor Police Constable Ralph Delbridge told the BBC that the arrogant approach to driving employed by some motorists was causing danger on the roads and directly affecting casualty figures.
