Over 1m car insurance customers
'speak out against road charges'
11/02/07
More than one million people have added their names to a petition
demanding the government rethinks road charges, it has been revealed,
in news that may interest some car insurance customers.
The petition was started by Peter Roberts, member of the Association
of British Drivers (ABD), to protest against a plan to bring in
tolls for using major roads across the UK, such as motorways and
trunk roads.
Motorists already have to pay a range of costs to get on the road,
such as MOT bills, road tax and third party car insurance cover.
And Nigel Humphries of the ABD has claimed that road pricing plans
are a "bad idea" and form another instance of "government
spin" on transport issues.
The petition is due to close on February 20th 2007 and, with 300,000
names added in five days, Mr Humphries said that "the sky's
the limit" with regards to how many motorists will sign the
document in total.
"Road pricing is just another tax - and a tax that is unfair, expensive
to administer and difficult and inconvenient to collect," he argued.
"And it won't improve congestion without large-scale investment."
Last week, Mark McArthur-Christie, policy director at the ABD,
warned that the road pricing scheme could prompt many motorists
to avoid major routes, leading to increased traffic on rural lanes.
Consequently, Mr McArthur-Christie warned that the proposals could
have road safety implications for country areas.
The ABD campaigns on behalf of car insurance customers and other
road users on behalf of a range of motoring issues.
