Motorists urged to check car insurance terms
06/03/08
Drivers have been advised to make sure they understand every aspect of their car insurance policies to ensure they do not make ineligible claims.
According to Which? Legal Service, comprehensive motor insurance policies in particular can be tricky to fully understand at first glance.
Drivers should read all small print, particularly with regards to whether items such as windscreens, windows and tyres are covered, the organisation states.
Motorists should also check whether there are any requirements they must fulfil to keep their car insurance policies valid, such as keeping vehicles in a garage overnight.
Policyholders may also want to verify what terms such as "social, domestic and pleasure" actually cover.
"A 'comprehensive' policy might sound like it covers everything, but always read the small print to make sure you know what's included and what you'll have to pay in the event of a claim," commented Which? Legal Service lawyer Monica Jaimini.
There are a variety of car insurance policies available for UK drivers.
For example, third party insurance is the minimum level of cover required for British motorists and covers the cost of damage to other people or property caused by your car. However, it does not cover the driver or the vehicle.
Third party fire and theft policies cover the same factors as a third party product, as well as covering the vehicle against theft and fire.
Comprehensive policies cover all of these instances, while legal expenses insurance options can also be added to the policy.
