'Most commuter casualties in the north-west'

Motorists in the north-west of England may be the most likely to need to claim on their car insurance, as a study has shown the region to be the most likely to have commuter casualties.

According to findings by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Foundation, those based in the north-west have the most hazardous journeys to and from work.

Meanwhile, those in the north east have the safest journeys, following by residents of the east Midlands, Yorkshire and Humberside.

The results were worked out with reference to number of car accidents, travel times and pollution, with Londoners suffering the highest CO2 levels and the longest journey times.

In addition, it was also discovered that 71 per cent of people drive to work, while 11 per cent walk.

Some eight per cent said that they travelled by bus, six per cent by train and three per cent by bicycle.

Executive director of the RAC Foundation Edmund King said: "Some people feel that commuting is only a problem in London and southeast England.

"When other factors such as accident rates are taken into account, our index shows problems elsewhere."

He added that as a result of the lack of alternative transport and the current number of automobile commuters, the car would remain the preferred method of getting to and from work for the near future.

Meanwhile, some car insurance holders may find that they have to pay a £350 tax to park in a space at work, with some councils planning to introduce extra taxation costs in a bid to get drivers to become greener by leaving their vehicles at home.
