Millions of car insurance
customers 'ignoring winter road safety tips'
09/02/07
Approximately a sixth of car insurance customers are failing to
take heed of winter road safety tips, according to the findings
of a new study.
Research from car insurance provider Kwik-Fit has revealed that
16 per cent of motorists in the UK do not carry any emergency equipment
to help them cope in the event of a breakdown.
This translates into approximately 4.3 million road users across
the UK, the car insurance broker suggests.
Moreover, the survey has also revealed what items recommended by
road safety experts are most frequently ignored by car owners.
Top of the list is keeping warm clothes in the car over wintertime,
with 79 per cent of car insurance customers admitting that they
fail to do this.
Meanwhile, 65 per cent do not carry a warning triangle in their
vehicle to alert other road users that the car up ahead has broken
down.
And 64 per cent do not keep bottled water in the car to prevent
dehydration, while 53 per cent have no thick blankets to hand.
David White, customer services director at Kwik-Fit, suggested
that car insurance customers should have learnt their lesson from
previous bouts of wintry weather.
"Most people recall arctic weather conditions that have left thousands
of motorists stranded in their cars for house," he said.
"Carrying essential survival items such as warm clothes, extra food and
drink can make lengthy waits in the cold weather safer and more comfortable."
Earlier this week, David Collicott, traffic management and road
safety inspector for Gloucestershire police, told motorists to
think twice about how urgent their journey really was before getting
behind the wheel.
And he pointed out that many rural roads might not have been gritted
after the snowfall, potentially creating treacherous driving conditions
for a number of car insurance customers.
