Law-breaking drivers caught in Yorkshire
02/04/08
More than a thousand motorists have been stopped by police in North Yorkshire as part of a crackdown on motoring offences.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, more than 1,100 vehicles were pulled over by officers during the campaign, while 1,025 drivers were prosecuted for various crimes - potentially also endangering their car insurance premiums.
The publication states that the campaign is aiming to make the region's roads safer.
Chief Superintendent Sue Cross said stated: "There were 81 people killed and 731 seriously injured on our roads last year.
"If you consider the cost of those losses - everyone of those deaths was a son or daughter, husband or wife, mother or father - then I am sure that you will agree it is totally unacceptable."
The campaign began on March 18th and has netted 290 drivers for speeding, 90 for offences relating to seatbelts and 43 for using a handheld mobile phone at the wheel.
Another 13 motorists were found to have been drink driving.
Additionally, 21 vehicles were confiscated by officers for being without car insurance cover or having defects. Another 22 automobiles meanwhile were issued with vehicle defect rectification notices.
In February, officers launched a crackdown on uninsured drivers, many of whom are believed to be burglars and are likely to flee from crashes, the publication reports.
The operation was launched in response to figures showing that up to 60 per cent of cars in Bradford are being driven illegally, while the figure for Huddersfield is almost a quarter.
