Lancs Police gifted with new car to clamp down on vehicle crime
26/03/08
Police in Lancashire may be better equipped to help defend local motorists' car insurance premiums after they received the gift of a new marked police car.
Local radio stations Unity FM and One Voice teamed up to make the purchase, along with an amount of equipment to help the force clamp down on car crime and gang-related incidents.
Among the vehicle's modern technological features is an automatic number plate recognition system, the Preston and Leyland Citizen reports.
Preston Police's DCI Marc Vincent commented: "We are extremely grateful for this support from both Unity FM and One Voice Neighbourhood Management Boards and I would like to thank all those that have supported us during the funding process."
The vehicle will be used by the Fulwood Uniform Task Force to clamp down on car and gang crime.
DCI Vincent added: "The police have invested heavily in setting up the new Fulwood Uniform Task Force and this additional resource will allow us to work in partnership through shared priorities of reducing vehicle crime and tackling the threat posed from gangs in the East Preston area."
Jennifer Carthy from Unity FM stated that such incidents tended to occur in the disadvantaged areas of the city, adding that the radio station was "delighted" to be able to help make East Preston a safer place.
Meanwhile, officers in Lancashire recently launched Operation Partridge to crack down on the sale of illegal car parts and unroadworthy vehicles.
