Lack of knowledge 'puts young drivers at risk'
03/04/07
Inexperienced car shoppers could be risking their lives and savings, according to a leading car insurance group.
Aviva claimed that young drivers' lack of technical knowledge increases their risk of buying a vehicle that is not as safe as it should be.
Research conducted by the insurer found that young drivers, more than any other group, are influenced more by the attractiveness of the salesperson and a vehicle's colour than by safety features such as the condition of brake pads.
It also found that in general, those aged between 17 and 24 do not know how to check for signs of welding (under the carpet between the front and back doors) or the state of a vehicle's shock absorbers (bouncing each corner).
Many British car buyers are simply too well-mannered to ensure they get a good deal, according to Aviva.
The car insurance provider found that 39 per cent of those shopping for a new vehicle fail to ask important questions, because they feel "awkward" doing so.
Ed Evans from RAC Vehicle Checks commented that it is "worrying" that young motorists' inexperience puts them at such an increased risk.
However, he added that drivers can take precautions before they start their shopping, such as reading up about the potential pitfalls or paying for a vehicle check.
Research published by Direct Line last month found that young drivers' lack of basic car maintenance skills means they collectively fork out more than £140 million each year.
The car insurance provider found that many under-25s are clueless when it comes to tasks such as changing a tyre or checking their vehicle's oil.
