Japanese cars 'most reliable'

Cars made in Japan are the most reliable, according to the latest car reliability survey by Which?

The magazine conducted the 'Reliability Uncovered' survey of nearly 90,000 cars and found that Japanese car brands took the top seven places in the league table for most reliable vehicle.

Honda sits at the top of the chart with a reliability index rating of 85 per cent, followed by Toyota, with 84 per cent, Daihatsu, with 83 per cent and Lexus, which also scored 83 per cent.

Car insurance customers may be interested to know that Mazda, Subaru and Suzuki all followed in the table, each scoring 83 per cent.

However, the survey found that the Honda Civic, which is made in Swindon, is one model that fell short of the brand's reliability standards as it came in at joint bottom of the table with the Citroen C4.

British car manufacturers did not perform well in the report, with Land Rover coming bottom with a score of 67 per cent.

Vauxhall, Jaguar and Mini all recorded average scores for reliability with 75, 78 and 78 per cent respectively.

Richard Headland, editor of Which? Car, said: "Japan continues to show the rest of the world how to make consistently reliable cars, although the new Honda Civic shows they're not infallible. Some British-built cars on the other hand, don't exactly run like clockwork."

Earlier this month, Toyota, which came second in the reliability survey, won the Green Car of the Year accolade for its Yaris model.

The Environmental Transport Association handed the Japanese car maker the award as part of Green Transport Week, which runs between the 14th and 22th of June.
