Half of car insurance holders 'may be risking a vehicle breakdown'

Motorists planning to drive off into the sunset this bank holiday weekend might want to extend their car insurance to include breakdown cover as a study has shown how important such a policy could be.
Research by repairs firm Kwik-Fit has highlighted that almost half of the UK's car insurance customers fail to check their vehicle batteries, while a further 25 per cent admit to never having their tyres examined.
The figures are in addition to results which show that together, battery and tyre problems account for more than a quarter of all vehicle breakdowns in the UK.
On the back of the findings, the firm is urging car insurance customers to ensure they are fully prepared before embarking on long journeys this summer.
David White, customer service director at the company commented: "No-one wants to spend their valuable holiday time sat by the side of the road waiting for an emergency breakdown vehicle.
"A few simple checks can actually do something to reduce the amount of summer breakdowns - indeed 27 per cent of breakdowns are caused by battery and tyre problems - which could probably have been avoided."
Website Kait8.com states that car insurance customers should be especially attentive to their vehicle batteries in warmer months and potentially reduce the chance of breaking down.
This, it states, is because heat can cause battery fluid to evaporate, damaging the cell.
