Drop in speeding fines noted

The UK's road users, including car insurance holders, seem to be speeding less frequently, according to the latest statistics from a car rental company.
National Car Rental has said it receives thousands of fines related to congestion charges, parking, speeding and traffic offences each month as a result of the actions of people who hire the company's vehicles.
Figures from the fourth quarter of 2007 saw a 108 per cent fall in the number of speeding tickets the car rental firm received compared with the equivalent three-month period in 2006.
The number of speeding fines received was also 40 per cent less than during the third quarter of 2007, suggesting car insurance customers and other drivers are paying more attention to their speed.
"Our quarter four figures have revealed some positive results with speeding fines falling dramatically after consistent falls each quarter throughout the year. This will be welcome news to businesses concerned about driver behaviour," said David Alexander, operations director for National Car Rental.
While congestion charge fines received were down 38 per cent in quarter four compared with quarter three in 2007, a rise of 27 per cent was seen when the final three months of 2007 was compared with the equivalent period from 12 months earlier.
Bus lane fines, parking fines and other traffic offences all fell during quarter four when compared with the three months previous to this.
Earlier this year, research from Brake and Green Flag revealed that nine per cent of younger drivers admitted driving while under the influence of illegal drugs.
