Drivers warned of forthcoming wintry weather
08/04/08
Motorists across England are being warned that further spells of wintry weather could be on the cards following the weekend's snow and sleet showers.
Drivers hoping to avoid car insurance claims in the bad weather might want to follow the advice of the Highways Agency and take extra care when out and about.
The motoring body is urging motorists who feel they have to travel in the conditions to ensure they are well prepared with supplies and warm clothing in their vehicles.
Drivers should also ensure they check weather information regularly and take care when driving near winter service vehicles.
>The Met Office has predicted that the weatherfronts could continue to affect England and the Midlands this week, before tailing off and being replaced by widespread frost.
Snow is likely to melt quickly but will settle overnight in some parts of the country, it has been suggested.
According to the Highways Agency, motorists should be aware than it can take up to ten times longer to stop on icy roads, so drivers should allow extra room.
It suggests that drivers also use the highest gear possible in such conditions to prevent wheelspin from occurring. Those who find themselves skidding are advised to slowly ease off the accelerator and gently apply the brake.
Meanwhile, the Highways Agency will be taking steps to ensure the roads are safe by sending out teams of gritters to treat key roads and motorways where snow has fallen.
