Drivers urged to protect their in-car items

Police in Wiltshire are urging local drivers to be cautious about what they take with them in their vehicles.

Following the theft of a handbag from a car that was parked on the edge of the Longleat estate, officers are warning motorists not to transport valuable items in their vehicles, the Wiltshire Times reports.

The automobile in question - a green Nissan - was broken into by a criminal who made off with the handbag, which could have resulted in a car insurance claim for the owner in addition to the loss of personal items.

Police are now appealing to the public for information and have released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident, which took place outside Warminster.

Officers are urging drivers to remove items that are needed during the journey when they leave the car, which could include devices such as satellite navigation systems, to avoid a break-in that could see a motorist risk a car insurance claim.

They warn that thieves may be watching a driver leave their car, so motorists should be wary of placing valuables in the boot or a glove compartment.

In addition, if someone sees a break-in take place, police ask that they do not approach the offender, but make a 999 call and prepare to report what they saw along with a description of the criminal.

Hampshire Police are currently trying to catch thieves red-handed by baiting vehicles with valuables and taping offenders breaking in to make off with the loot.
