Drivers urged not to wrongly use disabled spaces
28/09/07
Drivers, potentially including car insurance holders, are being warned not to use disabled parking spaces unless they are registered handicapped.
One supermarket chain has outlined plans to fine those drivers who flout the law regarding disabled spaces, with a pilot project seeing motorists pay between £50 and £60 for breaking the rules.
Asda has implemented the scheme in its Merseyside store car parks and plans to roll out the initiative across the rest of its outlets across the country in the near future.
Spokesman for Asda Paul Hedley said that some drivers may not be aware of the impact they are having on other people.
"Many of us simply don't realise just how hard crossing a car park with shopping can be if walking is a real struggle," he stated.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, a spokeswoman for Asda said that the scheme did not mean to catch drivers unawares; rather, it had been developed to act as a deterrent.
Shoppers, perhaps including car insurance holders, have so far ignored requests from car park hosts who have asked them not to use special spaces if they are not disabled, in addition to leaflets on car windscreens and messages played over a loudspeaker.
Cash raised through the fining system will be used to fund car park patrols, the supermarket has claimed.
Meanwhile, in related news, almost 1,800 people have been fined for using the dedicated parking space belonging to Bolton's mayor, reports the Bolton News.
