Drivers 'ignoring winter driving tips'
10/12/07
Most motorists plan not to take heed of driving advice this winter - potentially leaving themselves open to car insurance claims.
Research by vehicle supermarket Motorpoint has shown that 75 per cent of motorists are planning to carry on through the weather regardless of good advice, despite the Met Office forecasting harsher than usual elements.
Motorpoint operations director Paul Winfield said: "The British have always had their own special relationship with the weather. But we were surprised by the extent to which drivers are prepared to ignore the obvious threat posed by longer nights and worsening weather and risk a breakdown or even an accident."
He added that as a member of Roadsafe, a road safety organisation, the firm would encourage drivers to listen to the advice given to them by professionals.
Mr Winfield also suggested that motorists make use of cheaply priced winter car checks soon, which could potentially help them avoid a car insurance claim when the weather gets colder and more severe.
Meanwhile, tyre maker Goodyear is also urging drivers to stay safe this winter and have their wheel tread examined by professionals before the harsher weather sets in.
It suggests that a good way of increasing safety this winter would be to improve the points at which the vehicle makes contact with the road by choosing to replace worn down old tyres with new, improved tread alternatives that offer better grip.
