Drivers given beauty spot warning
06/03/08
Motorists planning to make use of local beauty spots in Surrey and Guildford are being urged to ensure their vehicles are safe.
A car parked at Frensham Little Pond recently fell victim to thieves who broke in through a rear window and snatched and handbag which, together with its contents, was worth £200.
The criminals also caused £200 worth of damage - for which the motorist may have had to make a car insurance claim.
Police are warning drivers that thieves tend to strike at weekends when they know car parks will be their busiest.
To avoid falling victim to such incidents, motorists are advised not to park near shrubbery, but to leave their car in open, well-lit areas, preferably by busy roads or paths.
Officers state that most car crime is opportunistic and can therefore be prevented.
Drivers should leave handbags and wallets at home where possible and avoid storing possessions in their vehicles. Even though a bag may be empty, a thief could be unaware of this and break into the car anyway if they see belongings on show.
Meanwhile, car doors, windows and sunroofs should never be left unlocked or open and drivers should ensure they remember to remove their car stereo at all times.
Similar advice has been given by police in Lewes, the Sussex Express reports, after officers discovered that thieves had been spying on motorists using car parks at local beauty spots and stealing possessions from parked vehicles.
