Drivers confused by overseas insurance rules
20/03/08
Motorists have been urged to examine their car insurance policies before taking their wheels overseas this Easter.
With the long Easter weekend approaching, plenty of motorists are predicted to be considering a sojourn to continent by website uSwitch, yet many will be unaware of what car insurance cover they have when their wheels roll on foreign soil.
"It isn't only sun cream protection that holidaymakers need to worry about when driving abroad this year - motorists must also spend some time examining the protection offered by their car insurance provider," said Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uSwitch.com.
Mr Berkhauer added that consumers should be aware of clauses in their car insurance policies that prove restrictive, such as the number of days a car can be overseas before it must be in the UK to still be covered.
The company has said that while it is obligatory for firms to provide third party cover for driving abroad as part of a car insurance policy, this may be less than motorists have when they are covered in the UK and need to be sure exactly what they are covered for.
Some two-thirds are reportedly "oblivious" to the level of cover they have when driving overseas, while one in ten assumes their travel insurance covers them for driving in another country.
Car insurance holders were recently warned by company Car Parts Direct over the dangers of "bottoming out", suggesting cars could be involved in a serious accident at home or abroad if this proves to be a problem.
