Car insurance shirkers identified by Staffordshire police
26/03/07
As car insurance customers in Staffordshire may be all too aware, local police officers have confiscated more than 2,000 vehicles in the county over the past few months.
In the last 12 months, 2,113 motors have been seized after local road safety officers clamped down on offences such as failing to take out valid car insurance cover, get an MOT car repair check or have a current licence.
Indeed, some 459 drivers were given fixed-penalty notices for driving without adequate car insurance cover - in the UK, it is illegal to drive without a minimum of third party car insurance protection.
Meanwhile, a further 915 motorists were summoned to court for a failure to arrange a car insurance deal.
Commenting on the road safety offence, inspector Dawson of Staffordshire police urged motorists to "consider the consequences" of not having car insurance cover, including both the risk of prosecution and possible problems if they ran into another road user.
And he also explained why a number of motorists caught out by the crackdown did not have car insurance protection.
"Some drivers opt to pay their insurance by monthly payments but fail to pay after they have received the documents," he said.
"Of course, the insurance cover becomes invalid and this information is held on the police national computer so there is no hiding from having no insurance."
In a recent study by financing website uSwitch.com, it was revealed that there are more drivers without valid car insurance deals in Manchester than in any other part of the country.
