Car insurance policyholders
given winter road safety advice
08/02/07
Car insurance customers who are planning to brave icy driving
conditions have been given a range of tips by a road safety officer
based in Gloucestershire.
Many parts of the south-west, south-east and the midlands have
experienced sustained snowfall within the last 24 hours, which
is settling on the roads and sparking road safety concerns in many
areas.
To help keep car insurance customers safe in spite of the treacherous
conditions, inspector David Collicott, traffic management and road
safety inspector for Gloucestershire police, has urged them to
tell a friend where they are going before setting off.
Moreover, he has suggested that motorists conduct basic car care
checks such as checking that tyres are fully inflated and that
anti-freeze has been added to the car radiator.
And car insurance customers should also drive more slowly than
normal and maintain a greater distance from the vehicle in front
to minimise the risk of being involved in an accident, he said.
Motorists who hit another vehicle in wintry conditions face losing
their no-claims car insurance bonus and a hike in premiums when
they next come to renew their car insurance policy.
And Mr Collicott also told car insurance customers to think twice
before getting behind the wheel in the wintry weather.
"We must all question whether or not our journey is really necessary," he
said.
"The highways authorities are taking the appropriate measures to try to
keep the main roads prepared for the conditions but the minor and smaller roads
are unlikely to be treated to the same extent."
The Highways Agency takes responsibility for gritting motorways
and trunk roads in icy spells and oversees a fleet of approximately
400 gritters nationwide.
